The Resale Value is India's independent vehicle valuation index. We publish fair-market prices for used cars, and over time for two-wheelers and other assets on wheels, so that Indian consumers, banks, insurers, and journalists can make decisions using the same source of truth.
Where we come from
The Resale Value began as a data science project inside Cars24, India's largest used-car platform. Over eight years, Cars24 built the country's most comprehensive vehicle-transaction dataset: 10 million+ inspections across every state, every mainstream make and model, and thousands of variants.
That dataset is a public good, but it was locked inside a company that also sells cars. To make it useful for anyone (a consumer deciding whether to sell, a bank underwriting a loan, an insurer setting an IDV, a journalist writing about the market), it needed to live somewhere that had no incentive to skew the number.
That's why The Resale Value exists as a separate, editorially independent property.
Our data partnership with Cars24, in plain English
We think you deserve to know exactly how we're funded and where our data comes from, without reading a 10-page policy. Here it is:
- Data: Cars24 is our exclusive data partner and supplies us with anonymised transaction records for our pricing model.
- Funding: We are backed by Cars24 as an initial data-licensing venture. Over time, we intend to build a paid API business (banks, insurers, OEMs) so that we're commercially self-sustaining.
- Independence: Our methodology is not adjusted to favour any specific buyer, seller, dealer, or marketplace, including Cars24 itself. This is a written contractual condition of our data agreement, not just a nice thing to say.
- Editorial policy: Corrections, model updates, and material changes are published publicly on our methodology page. If you believe a valuation is materially wrong, you can tell us and we log the correction.
- What we don't do: We do not route users to Cars24 to sell. We do not embed Cars24 offers in our valuation flow. We do not collect your personal data at the point of valuation.
If any of the above changes, we will announce it publicly on this page and via our newsletter, before it takes effect.
Why we exist
Look at any category where large purchases happen, whether property, art, gold, or bonds, and there's a public, neutral price benchmark that everyone consults. Property has 99acres/Magicbricks indices. Gold has a published daily price. Bonds have yield curves.
Vehicles in India have never had this. Everyone quoting you a price, whether dealer, marketplace, or aggregator, is optimising for their outcome, not yours. The Resale Value is the first attempt to publish that benchmark for Indian vehicles, transparently.
